Have you ever had a wrist injury? It is quite common as we always make use of our hands and wrist. But do you know that some of the swelling on the wrist is a sign of a bigger problem. Most wrist injuries are either broken bone, infections, abnormal growths and cysts. That is why it is imperative that you pay attention if you see a swelling in your wrist that you didn't know the cause. You should immediately see a doctor when you have this condition.
Tenosynovitis
Tenosynovitis is described as the inflammation of the fluid-filled sheath (synovium) that surrounds a tendon which can be on your wrist. The inflammation is normally caused by a microtrauma or stress, and mostly affects people with physical jobs or hard labor. The abductor muscle and the short extensor in the thumb are usually affected. And the inflammation can thicken the ligament and damage the sheath (synovium).
De Quervain syndrome
This unusual disease produces cysts and nodules in the wrist and most of the time soreness and swelling. The extensor ligament is the part of the thumb that is affected, this is responsible for moving the thumbs upward and outwards. This syndrome will thicken your ligament up to twice its size and make any movement of the wrist extremely painful.
Nodular tenosynovitis
This is commonly caused by tumors in the hand. They normally occur in the thumb, index and medium finger, but can also be found in other areas of the body such as the wrist, hip, ankles, knees, spine and shoulders. These tumors are commonly painless, as only 21% of the patients have reported pain, but it still need to be checked by your doctor.
Ganglions
Ganglions in the wrists are large lumps related to the degeneration of a synovial cyst or some other connective tissues next to the joint, usually a tendon or ligament. This could be connected to a past trauma or injury, with 50-70% of the lumps on the wrists being gangliomas. They normally grow up to 2.5 cm. in size.
Lipomas
Lipomas are benign tumors in the wrist that may also appear on the palm of your hands. They can render you unable to extend your fingers, thus very debilitating. Unlike other injuries, lipomas are always accompanied by pain and an increased sensitivity.
There are different treatments for unique types of wrist injuries, it normally depends on the severity and the cause of the problem. If the injury is annoying and painful, it can be treated with painkillers but it is not recommended to keep doing this as you might be dependent on the pills. However, if it causes bigger problems, it may require a surgery and proper medication. This is why it’s important to recognize the problem on time and consult with a doctor for the appropriate remedy or action.
